Welcome Gooners! I want to start my blog by writing about the recent big event that happened at the Emirates, the sacking of Unai Emery.
Remember when Emery joined in the start of last season, our club legend had just left the club after going through the worst years of his tenure and the fans were shocked but hopeful about the future ahead. With a number of changes in the backroom and coaching department, we finally greeted the new season with open arms.
Obviously things weren't going to get better right away after Arsene Wenger's departure since we had seen other clubs go through tough times whenever a long serving manager left (Manchester United most notably), but we were already going through tough times since the last 4-5 years at least so how bad can it be. Moreover, the preseason under Emery showed some positive signs. We finally bought a known CB (a bit late but still not that bad), the team showed renewed energy and most importantly, we got a DM who could actually defend! (I surely had long forgotten what that felt like)
The first two games of the season were obviously tough but after that we managed to go on a 21 game streak without losing. There were mistakes happening here and there but most of us though Emery would learn, its just the beginning.
December came and brought with it its usual problems for Arsenal, injuries and fixture congestion, so begins Emery's demise. Although we managed to get better around the end of February, that only lasted for almost a month and a half. The end of the season was particularly frustrating as our beloved top-4 was in our reach with not top 6 team to play against but of-course the FA has this strange rule of making teams play away from home (they don't want us to win). Anyways, we finished 5th thanks to Man Utd's poor form that season, and also got humiliated in the final of Europa League.
This season didn't show much promise apart from the transfers department. Emery kept on making consistent mistakes and showed no sign of flexibility and hence, brought the now unavoidable sack upon him. My honest opinion of him was never that he would be the man to take Arsenal to the top again considering his poor man management at PSG, his midfield problems at Sevilla and the fact that its going to take us time to get back up due to the big changes happening at our club.
Regardless, I hoped he can turn his fortunes and last till the end of this season atleast but he gave himself no chance. Sadly even the players had stopped playing for him which is always a sad thing to see.
In the end, I would like to thank Emery for the good moments especially that electrifying 4-2 win over Spurs. Hope he gets success somewhere else but he wasn't the right man for us. He was one of the most polite managers we have seen in the recent years and I wish him more 'Good Evenings' to come.
